A GENTLE UNDERSTANDING
Women living with autoimmune conditions, age-related changes, or illnesses like Fibromyalgia often carry a quiet frustration…
The desire to live as they once did — to stay productive, to care for their homes and families, to create, to give.
But the body tells a different story. Sometimes it shows up with muscle pain and fatigue, sometimes by immune system weakness that makes you susceptible to other illnesses such as flu or strep or various viruses that you are exposed to!
I’ve learned to see a flare not as failure, but as a sensitive alarm system — one that sounds when too many things stack up:
Stress. Poor sleep. Overdoing it. Trying to live at a pace my body can no longer sustain.
At this season of life, the answer is not pushing harder… it’s learning to live with rhythm and gentleness — like a porch swing, steady and unhurried.
WHAT CAN TRIGGER A FLARE
- Trying to keep up with someone else’s pace of life
- Giving more than I have to give
- Overcreating / overcommitting
- Extra stress (even good stress)
- Poor sleep
- Inconsistent meals or hydration
When these stack up, the body responds… and asks to be heard.
WHEN A FLARE HITS: SOOTHE, DON’T PUSH
REST — BUT GENTLY
Give your body permission to slow down. Avoid full immobility—light movement helps prevent stiffness.
HEAT IS YOUR FRIEND
A steady, comforting warmth can ease pain and tension:

• Epsom salt baths for muscle relaxation

GENTLE MOVEMENT
• Stretching
• Slow walking
• Light yoga
Even 5–10 minutes can soften stiffness and improve circulation.
HYDRATION + SIMPLE NOURISHMENT
• Drink water consistently
• Add electrolytes if needed
• Choose simple foods: soups, protein, vegetables
• Propel hydration support

CALM THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Lower stimulation. Create peace.
• Quiet time, prayer, journaling
• Deep breathing
• Dim lighting
• Candle warmer lamp (safe, soft light + timer)

PAIN SUPPORT
• Over-the-counter options like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen
• Prescription options if recommended by your doctor
• Magnesium spray (natural support)

A SOFTER WAY TO LIVE
A flare is not the end of your productivity. It is an invitation to live differently, by:
- pausing sooner
- resting earlier
- noticing your limits
- and creating a life that your body can sustain
TRUTH TO HOLD
I am not failing—I am learning.
I am allowed to live gently.
I can still live a beautiful, meaningful life… just at a softer pace.
